The Chenin for this wine is sourced from a single vineyard on the outskirts of Malmesbury, South Africa, planted with dry farmed bush vines. Grapes undergo 9 weeks of skin contact and the result is a truly impressive wine. A must have summer wine!
Grapes: 100% Chenin Blanc
Region: Swartland, South Africa
Tasting notes/pairing options: A deep golden orange colour, with complex aromas of exotic fruits, apricot, honey and quince. The palate has structure but also plenty of freshness and minerality, making it serious but also incredibly drinkable.
Certified organic, suitable for vegans and vegetarians
The producer/the estate:
Mother Rock is a collaboration between winemaker Johan Meyer and Ben Henshaw. Johan, a star of the new South African wine scene, has developed strong relationships with some of the best grape growers across the Cape over the years, and as a result he has gained access to some of the region’s best fruit. Johan recently purchased land in Picketberg in the north of the Swartland. He has built a winery and planted vines here - Rhone varietals on the warmer north facing slope and Pinot Noir and Chardonnay on the south slope. This cooler, high altitude site is the new HQ for Mother Rock and JH Meyer Wines, he's hoping to have his own fruit for the 2023 vintage. Ultimately, Mother Rock is about showcasing the best and purest expression of South Africa’s diverse terroir.
We are a close family business and are currently in our second generation. We are based on our natural lavender farm, Yorkshire Lavender in the North Yorkshire countryside.
So why wine?
With a member of our staff, Timi, a trained sommelier; it seemed crazy to let that enthusiasm and experience go to waste.
Wine starts in the ground! Just like lavender the correct soil, conditions and care are vital to grow excellent grapes to make exceptional wine.
Our commitment to our natural lavender farm along with Timi’s enthusiastic expertise has led to a developing interest in natural, organic, bio-dynamic wines.
