Lavender FAQs

Below are some answers to common questions from customers. If you can't find the information you are looking for, please email us at and ask any questions you have.

Smallest – Little Lady

Largest/tallest – Grosso

Hardiest – Hidcote and Grosso

Traditional English varieties – Hidcote, Munstead, Imperial Gem and Peter Pan

Bees' favourite - Grosso

Best variety for a hedge or row:

  • Hidcote – neat and traditional
  • Grosso large – coverage
  • Little Lady – short and compact

Soil – Lavender loves dry soil! Mix small stones/pebbles and grit sand into the soil to aid with drainage.

Watering – General rule of thumb, water sparingly as lavender loves dry soil. Water every 2 to 3 days after planting for the first 2 weeks; after this water only if the weather is very hot.

Please note – lavender planted in pots will need watering more regularly than plants in the ground.

Feeding – We don’t recommend feeding lavender, however you can use ‘Levington Tomorite Concentrated Tomato Food’.

How many plants do I need? – We recommend planting 3 or 4 plants within a meter or 9 to 16 per meter square.

For large varieties like Grosso and Edelweiss, plant 3 per metre.
