How to make Pot Pourri with Dried Lavender
The pale purple colour and delicate fragrance of dried lavender makes it a popular choice for many households. Known for its calming and medicinal qualities, dried lavender is easily obtained and can be used in a number of different ways from cooking to cleaning. Lavender pot pourri is a common favourite among the uses of dried lavender, adding a soothing aroma to any room. A great gift idea that is easy to make in just a few simple steps.
Pot pourri can be made with an assortment of dried fruits and petals; however a strictly lavender based pot pourri can provide a subtle, sweet scent, perfect for any occasion. This is made with the head of the lavender flower.
To begin, take the dried lavender heads and leaves and place them in a pillowcase. Gently roll the pillowcase up into a loose ball. This enables the buds to loosen slightly, releasing the delicate fragrance.
Once lightly crushed, pour the flowers into a bowl adding 1 to 2 tbsp of orris root for every cup of dried flowers. Orris root has a neutral aroma and helps to preserve the fragrant lavender flowers. It can be purchased from all good whole food shops.
Secondly, add a few drops of lavender essential oil evenly amongst the mixture of lavender leaves and buds, this will intensify the soothing scent. The pot pourri must then be stored in a sealable container for up to a fortnight, to allow the aroma to fully infuse.
After several weeks the pot pourri will be ready to arrange into a decorative bowl for presentation, providing peace and tranquilly to any setting with a comforting yet elegant lavender fragrance. Alternatively, the pot pourri can be packaged into a clear bag and sealed with ribbon to create a wonderful, homemade gift.
